I'll just limit my review to the cons because I don't want to continue the redundancy of talking about what these products can do.
First: Hygiene! the TRX falls short especially if you are sharing the product with others. The Jungle Gym handles and foot cradles are made of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer, which is a sturdy plastic with a rubber-like feel), and the XFit rings are olympic styled rings (lowest level is a very sturdy, almost invincible, hard plastic). Which both are easy to clean. The TRX, on the other hand, has a foam-like material over the handles, and the foot cradles over the nylon webbing. Which you can't clean unless you want to speed up the deterioration process. So, little microbes can fester on the handles and foot cradles. So if you share it with others, have an anti-bacterial gel nearby.
Next: Durability! I've had the TRX the longest, So it's been worked over!!! the main components of the straps are still well in tact. But!!! the foam on the handles have worn down, and are splitting. I've called FitnessAnywhere to find a solution, and they mailed me (for free), TAPE!!! Yes, TAPE!!! does it work? Yes. for how long? I don't know. Definitely not a long term solution though. There only other offer was another older model force kit for a discounted price (ten dollars less than the newest model). The Rings are solid and I know they will maintain its over-all integrity for many years to come. For the Jungle Gym, I'm familiar with many gym products and seeing the design and quality of the materials, there is premium quality, long lasting materials. You can tell it's the best made even if you compare all the products side by side if they were all new.
NEXT: Comfort. TRX, even with the foam handles, are last place. why??? the adjustable METAL buckle is designed to sit at a right angle to the handles. which means LOTS of snagging when doing pushing exercises. When I had the TRX the first two years, I would constantly have scratch marks on my arms, shoulders, and neck because of the metal buckle snagging me during use. Actually, an under armour long sleeve shirt (or similar) will go a long way. With the rings, the metal buckle can be adjusted to be away from your range of movement. The Jungle Gym, The adjustable buckle contraptions are modeled like the TRX except that it is made of a very durable hard plastic, contoured and rounded so there are no uncomfortable edges, and they lay flush (not at a right angle) to the handles. So... NO SNAGGING!!!

The Xfit rings don't have designed foot cradles, but if you are at an intermediate fitness level, you can stand your feet on the rings, and do all the foot cradle exercises comfortably. The jungle gym's foot cradles are by far the easiest to get in and out of, and the most comfortable.
LASTLY: Portability! Finally, the TRX wins in this category. One, it comes with a mesh drawstring bag. If you want one so badly, spend five dollars and get one for the other products. Also, the TRX packs the smallest. Actually, I have the first model Force kit, and it packs about a third of the size of all the current TRX models and is slightly lighter. I actually HATE that the newer TRX models are bulkier than they used to be. All the models have the bulkier (less expensive), nylon webbing. Don't be fooled if someone will try to lie to you and say it's better quality. it's not. I actually have the older, BETTER product. They're saving money!!! Even though they other products (XFit Rings, and Jungle Gym XT) don't pack as small, they are still VERY PORTABLE.
Because I have all the products, I have the advantage of doing total body suspension exercises. I can mix either of the products to achieve that. For my personal use, I'd use the Jungle Gym XT for my feet, and the rings for my hands (which coincidently, is the best buy), or you can get two Jungle Gyms, or Two TRX's. I'd recommend to getting two jungle gyms though.

Not essential for a good pushup plan (you can get conventional pushup bars for half the price) but it's a good reward tool for when you reach your fitness milestones. I wouldn't bother with the more expensive pushup handles. This one does the job well and it's fun to have to put some excitement back into your workout plan.

Very sturdy and heavy. The tower is about 7'6" tall. I can do pull ups and dips without issue (well I still have an issue in doing them, but the tower has no issue holding my weight). The tower arrives in pieces in one box. The box is very heavy and you might need help lifting it. Follow the instructions and DO NOT tighten the bolts until it is fully assembled. You might also need some help in getting it assembled. Four hands would be better than two. I did it alone and wished I had help a few times. Make sure it is level before tightening everything and you will be ready to go. My only complaint is that my hands we black after putting it together. I guess it is from the powder coating. I have not noticed any paint coming off while using it, but all of the places you put your hands to do exercises have rubber grips. Overall I am very pleased with this tower and would recommend it to anyone looking for this type of equipment. It will also make a great clothes hanger if you stop using it :) 

 This equipment is very well built and solid.I'm about 180 lb. and the base is very stable.Take care when assembling to get it tight : use socket set. Assembly is easy. Pay attention to headspace, the unit is high and could be a problem .I would purchase again.

Obviously my wife wasn't going to let me take her TRX and leave it in the office. I was not really interested in buying another TRX for $200. So, I started looking around. I found a few other options, but they were dual poinst suspension systems. I researched enough to decide that I wanted the single point system like a TRX. I saw this thing on Amazon and thought "No way, it has to be a cheesy knock-off." Then I read the reviews, then I went to the website and read about the components they use. That sold me.

Delivery of the product was very fast. I got the item in less than a week and took it into the office. The setup with the door mount was fast. I just looped the handles and door mount on the metal parts and adjusted the straps to the right length for the exercises. Within 5 minutes I was doing pushups and body-weight pullups. I do not notice any difference in the exercises from my wife's TRX. I'll come back and update the review if I find anything, but I honestly can't see purchasing a more expensive suspension system for working out.

If you want to try suspension system training, buy this product NOW! If you decide that it is not pretty enough to show your friends, you can always spend $200 later for a TRX.

Edit: After half a year, this thing is still a main part of my fitness routine. I have used the anywhere strap when I run in the forest or do intervals at the track. It is easy to strap it to a tree branch and add in resistance training to my run.

I have had one issue. The spectra cord door anchor bites into my door jam when I do reverse flies or other 'high' exercises. This is due to the really tight door jams in my house. I don't have the same problem in the office. To solve this, I bought a doughnut and strap door anchor similar to the one that comes with Bodylastics sets. I still rate this as five stars because it is such a well constructed and easy to use fitness product.

In the few short weeks I've owned it, I have been able to take the TRX Home Training Bundle on a camping trip, on a business trip, and to work with me for a 2-day IT system crash event.

While camping I was able to use trees and the rafters in a pavilion to support the TRX system, and found both made easy platforms for great workouts. At hotels and while trapped at work for two days, I was able to use the door mount to sneak in some workouts, and I found that platform to be stable as well.

So it seems to me you can almost always find a place to mount the TRX system, as long as you exercise a little common sense about doing so safely. And once it's mounted securely, the TRX system is quite versatile, and allowed me to perform many exercises to get a completely taxing strength workout. The system is simple to use and well-marked for making quick changes between exercises. For the configurations that are less intuitive, the included book provides good illustrations, tips, and tricks.

The only reason I withheld a 5th star on this review is because of the way the TRX system is constructed. The materials and workmanship seem solid to me. But the product is finished in such a way that very little of the system is modular. That is to say, if you were ever to wear out a pad on one of the handles, replacing it would require a lot of craftsmanship, not just a simple swap-out. So I expect that needing to replace any component on the TRX system would likely be met with having to replace the whole kit and kaboodle. I think a modular design would allow me to be more aggressive with the unit while making me comfortable I could replace parts fairly inexpensively. ('Cause let's face it, nearly $200 for nylon and ingenuity is pushing it anyway).

The only reason I can't give this bike 5 stars is because of the hardness of the seat. Even though I purchased the Sunlite Gel Bicycle Seat Cover (which Amazon suggested in the Frequently Purchased Together section of the bike's webpage) at the same time that I purchased the bike, it barely makes a difference. After 30 minutes of riding, I am literally forced to get off of the bike. I also put a thick towel on top of the Gel Seat Cover, and even with that extra measure, my butt and family jewels are rendered numb from the hardness of the seat. I probably should have done more research on seat covers instead of simply buying the one that Amazon suggested. If you buy this bike, instead of buying the Sunlite Gel Bicycle Seat Cover that Amazon suggests, do as much research on the seat covers as you do on the bike, and buy the cushiest one with the best customer reviews. I wish I would have done this originally, but I wanted to write this review so that others won't make the same mistake.

It was extremely easy to piece together (I have put together a Bowflex Treadclimber in the past, as well as a StairMaster so this was practically nothing at five parts) and even easier to use. However, the stride IS significantly shorter than that of a standard health club elliptical--after about ten minutes of using the trainer, though, I didn't even notice the short stride.

I bought the trainer as an alternative to running or biking outside since the cold weather is settling in and I wanted no excuses when it came to maintaining some sort of exercise regimen. I must say that I absolutely love this little machine.

~ Easy to assemble, moderately affordable in comparison to larger, higher-quality gym machines, virtually silent in operation.
~ Good for apartments - I live on the second floor and my neighbors have never heard me.

CONS:
~ The digital counter is inaccurate and faulty. This isn't a problem for me, as I use a chest-strap heart monitor whenever I'm working out (I have a mild heart condition) which more closely tracks things like heart rate, calories and time.
~ There is a bit of wobbling from the main unit but nothing that would throw off balance or cause injury if the product is used correctly.
~ If you suffer from balance impairment issues, this would NOT be a good machine for you - the lack of handlebars requires a steady posture.

Since I've owned the trainer, I've noticed a very significant change in my body. That said, I tend to do 45 mins to an hour every other day on a few notches below the highest resistance. I pair my sessions with a set of 3 lb. hand weights and that really revs up my heart rate.

I have tried out almost every type of machine out there (I have been a member of three different health clubs) and would DEFINITELY recommend this trainer from what I've seen so far with it if you're looking to keep active and have few other options.

(I tried walking alone on previous attempts and walking by itself as the main exercise did not cut it for me for drastic weight loss.)

This rower offers a full body workout! I ordered the machine and it arrived inside of a week. The rower literally snaps together. I did call customer service with a couple questions, and they were very helpful and walked me through the set-up. It is sturdy for big guys like me. The only maintenance I have done is an occasional wiping of light oil on the pull chain- that's it. The machine is not so noisy that I can't watch TV while working out. I strongly recommend this rower!

TWO YEAR UPDATE (2/12/11)- I still use the rower and it is still in PERFECT condition! The seat is a bit softer but no wear or tear. 4 friends have purchased this rower after trying out mine. About a year ago I reached 215 pounds using the same program described above. Then, totally unrelated to the rower, I pinched a nerve in my right shoulder from an old dislocation I had as a kid. I had to stop rowing because of the discomfort. Within 6 months I gained 10 pounds and was up to 225 again. My shoulder had healed so I tried this rower again, only this time instead of extended cardio several times a week, I incorporated the rower with Dr. Al Sears high intensity interval training, three times a week for about 12-15 minutes. All I can say is "wow", within 6 weeks I blasted 25 pounds off with no discomfort. The rower was perfect for his method! I also experimented with a powerlung, and used it for once a week, 10 minutes at low intensity. My lung power greatly improved. Although I have not religiously used the powerlung once a week, I try to use it whenever I am in the mood- about once every two weeks. The result has been great.

I was kind of leery about ordering a treadmill without actually seeing it in person. I had checked out a few different models and was reading the reviews of the one I had finally picked. One lady mentioned this one as a much better deal. Same price.(At the time of my purchase this was $299.00) The other one had many complaints about packaging and I could just see it showing up damaged so I checked this one out. I am so glad I did.
This model has everything I wanted for a beginners treadmill plus a few extras like a way to raise and lower the slant of the treadmill, 6 different programs, three for weight loss and three high intensity. It also has + and - buttons so I can increase or decrease speed a bit at a time or you can just use the 1-10 buttons for speed. It's fairly lightweight to fold up and locks in place. It has wheels so you can easily move it once it's folded.

Packaging- absolutely nothing moved inside that box when I opened it. Everything was cushioned with styrofoam, wrapped in plastic, boxed or covered in cardboard, reinforced and tied down. The outside of the box has a small tear on one side but no damage reached the unit inside. So, not a scratch.

It was easy to put together. I'm a 64 year old woman. I could move it around (once I had friends bring it inside my home), set it up and put in the screws. One connection to set up the electronics and you are good to go. Enclosed instructions are very clear.

All in all I am quite happy with this purchase. I've used it everyday since I received it. Did I mention it came earlier than they estimated? A day early. It's always nice when a company does better than you expect.

The item arrived safely and was well packaged. All the parts were included and easy to unpack. It took me about 20 minutes to assemble by myself (a second person is definitely not required). I jumped on and was amazed at 1) how quiet the machine is; I can actually hear my music or the TV while working out, and 2) what a fabulous workout this provides; my legs were burning within minutes! Having to push the belt with my legs provides a much better workout than a non-manual treadmill, and I could immediately feel the difference in my hamstrings and glutes - my biggest trouble spots. I was even able to jog on it; it feels very sturdy. It did take a few minutes to get a good groove going because the belt was slightly jerky, but as soon as I did it was smooth sailing. As everyone else has said, you will need to hold onto the handrails while using to keep from flying across the room and crashing into the dining room table, but it really isn't a big deal for me and doesn't seem to cause any problems. I am 5'4" and my inseam is about 30", and the length and width of the belt are plenty spacious; I never feel as though I might take a wrong step on accident. The machine is fairly lightweight and very easy to move around from room to room. And you can't beat the price! I was sad at first that I could only afford a manual treadmill, but now I realize that it was a much better purchase for me. It is smaller and takes up very little space; it folds up and can be stored in an out-of-the-way corner; it is lightweight; it is very sturdy; it has fewer electronic parts that can break and cost money to fix; and in my humble opinion, it simply provides a more efficient workout than one where there belt is moving for you. I would definitely purchase this product again.

The FREE amazon delivery of the treadmill came faster than usual; the shipping company called me to schedule a time for delivery to my house. They sent two guys and they brought it in all the way downstairs to my basement. This "free" service is outstanding. I read other reviews and people suggested you to open the box WHERE you intend to assemble it, so I followed through. I assemble it myself so it took longer than I could if I had an assistant. After lubricating the tread belt with the supplied silicone, I started running on the machine right away. I have been running about 12 miles on it so far (4 sessions of about 30 minutes each) and I cannot find any fault with the machine. It's quiet, stable and functional. I think the central bar chart LEDs are not as useful to people like me who find the two built-in programs too slow and need to set our own speed manually. Because this machine does not (seem to) allow users to program their own exercise programs, my console LEDs stay unchanged throughout the 30 minutes but that's not a problem. I think this machine is a good buy! I hope it last long!

A few summary notes for people who wishes to get theirs:
1. Open the box and assemble it where you intend to install it;
2. Have an assistant will speed up the installation process;
3. When loosening the tread belt to lube, make sure you remember how many times you turned the Hex Screws on BOTH ends so you can return the machine to factory settings.
4. Do NOT tighten screws until you have the whole thing assembled; completely tightening the lower screws on the base during the assembly makes assembling the control console much harder.

 Assembly:
At 10:20am, I brought the box inside from the front porch. At 11:18am I was pedaling away.

This assembly time included: opening the box, dumping it on the ground, examining the instruction manual which was not terribly useful, having my 2 year old "help" me put it together, chasing down bolts/washers she had walked away with, showing her how to tighten a bolt with an allen key, taking the center section apart to verify I had the wires connected properly (turns out the parity doesn't matter on those wires anyway), picking up little pieces of packing styrofoam so our dog didn't eat it and die, and adjusting the seat to my liking. It also included picking up the mess as I went, and sending a picture message of the bike box to my wife.

Adjustability/Sizing:
I'm 6'2" and this thing says it's good up to 6'3", so I pushed the seat all the way back. That was too far, my legs kept going almost to lock. I hopped off, loosened the bottom and left side securing knobs, and removed the right side knob for adjustment. Slid the rack forward one notch and retightened.

Some past users have complained about this process for when you have different users of multiple sizes using it in the same house hold. The procedure took me a timed, and unrushed, 27 seconds to complete. Pretty rough.

I ended up moving it forward one more notch (for two forward total from all the way back) to get where I'm comfortable with slightly bent knees at full extension.

Concerned about the seat size? It's just shy of 16" wide. It seems pretty padded, but I haven't ridden it much yet. I'm sure if it's uncomfortable over time you can just fold up that yoga matt you have rolled up in the corner going unused.

Construction/Weight Capacity:
Looks to be of pretty sturdy construction, most of it is made out of about 16gauge channel and box steel. Welds are good and clean, and the frame appears to be powdercoated. All of the hardware is heavy duty and of sufficient quantity (they didn't go with just a couple bolts to hold the front frame to the rear, they used 6 bolts).

The amazon video/description still states 325 pounds and the packaging stated 300 pounds. I'm pretty certain it'd hold someone over 300 pounds, but if you were rocking it hard it may eventually fail. If you stayed a good steady pace it'd probably hold up fine, and you'll probably drop those pounds fast anyway, right?

Tension/Resistance:
I expected the '1' setting to be like free spinning, but it actually has some resistance. The '8' is doable, but you're not gonna go far your first time. Very easy to adjust in between settings though.

Calorie meter (no it's not a calorimeter):
I don't think it takes into account the resistance, just speed and time, and obviously you don't get to enter in your weight so it's probably not terribly accurate.

I purchased this bike with the nearterm goal of getting in shape for an upcoming 13+ mile obstacle course race, and the longterm goal of just in general getting back in shape. I'll report back after the race and several months down the road for further durability comments.

My husband and I looked for a safe car seat for well over two months. We considered several Graco car seats but after reading they had been recalled in the past we steered clear. We went to Babies R Us and were looking at this and a Chicco key fit this one obviously won out. It fit best in our car, also the heaviest model at just over 9 lbs it's the heaviest model they had. I take that as a pro and a con, if it's heavier it probably means it is made out of better materials which it is, con it's heavy to carry around, with a now 17lb, 5 month old in it. Britax is the ONLY company that posts ALL of their crash test ratings online. But now that I have been using it for 5 months I can see some room for improvement. It fits nicely in my car (Hyundai Elantra)when I'm not driving (turning). The base moves easily 2 inches either way which in case of an accident isn't safe. I pull the belt as tight as possible but it still moves a little bit. Maybe that's just because of my car, I don't know. another con is the fabric although it cleans nicely isn't very soft especially the head rest part. it isn't very breathable either my babes head sweats so much poor guy and that's in Utah in January!
This car seat feels really strong, I like that a lot. My babies safety is number one. The straps don't dig into his neck which is nice.
I like this car seat, there are just definitely some things to know if you are looking at purchasing it.
My baby is super tall though as well so I'll be getting either the Britax marathon or the Peg Perego model. I'll try them both out first.

Took a chance and bought this fine machine from Amazon Warehouse Deals and lucked out this time. The bike arrived in two days, the shipping container showed signs of a very ruff journey and the internal packing foam, well, that's another story. The bike showed no signs of damage and only two screws were missing, being replaced by the manufacture. God help anyone that needs to return this item, you'll want to be a Prime member and request UPS pickup.

The bike goes together easily if you at least have basic mechanical skills. The included two tools will work, but owning a good magnetic Phillips screw driver, "T" handled Allen wrenches, metric socket set and/or wrenches works so much better.

The manual is better then most, but lacking. Note: 1)The Stabilizer with the wheels goes to the front, under the handle bars. 2)The computer requires two AA batteries not included. 3)There's a trick to installing the cell phone holder, the magnetic Phillips screw driver. 4)To insert/remove the SAFETY PIN, you need to lift the rear support to take the weight off the pin, juggling the rear support also helps the pin slide in/out easier, as the pin passes through a piece of tubing. There are tow holes on the rear support below the pivot bolt for the safety pin, top for ride position and lower for storage.

The bike is well made; strong enough to hold up to 300 pounds, welds, I've seen better work, powder coated, folds up making it portable and easy to store if you live in cramped quarters, and a large "Cruiser" style seat that is on the hard side (I ordered a third party Gel cover).

This bike is so quite and smooth, its wonderful, a real pleasure to peddle. Resistance, its got it if you want it, just turn the big knob and the sweat pours.

The computer is easy to read and works well, including the Pulse function. The computer starts up as soon as you start to peddle and scans all functions. There is only ONE button to operate the computer manually, if you desire to view just one function, use the button. There is a distance function that tracks your mileage during your workout. There's also an odometer that tracks the mileage for the life of the bike, unless you remove the batteries. About that one button, its also used to clear the data from the previous workout, by holding it down for three or four seconds.

Bought this bike to work my new Total Knee Replacement (TKA) and its doing the job as good as the high dollar bike at PT.

This is a fine bike for the money, especially if your needs are therapeutic. For hard core training, may need to look else were.

I bought this online because I wanted a trainer but didn't want to pay for a more expensive one. I've been using it 6 days/week for 3 weeks and so far it has been great! I ride a 21" Specialized Hard Rock Comp with 26" tires. Since I currently live in a place where mountains are scarce (hence the need for a trainer), I took off my knobby tires and put on some cheap Kenda cruiser tires. The noise level went down significantly with the change, and the trainer is working a lot better with the smooth tires. It is still a little noisy, but it isn't unbearable and I just turn up the TV when I'm using it.

I did have some concerns about buying this online, so I thought I'd address them here:
1. It works just fine with disc brakes and wide tires. I haven't had any problems at all with either.
2. Some people said that they have problems with their bike jumping out of the frame. I have checked my bike to see if this is happening every day before using it, and it has always been tight in the frame. Make sure that you push the plastic rings towards your bike to lock it into the trainer, and it should stay tight. Also, I made sure that my quick release tire lever was pointed up so that it sat properly in the trainer. At first I had it pointed sideways, and it was way too easy for the bike to slide out that way.
3. The resistance knob reaches all the way to my handlebars, but I found it to be annoying (I'm not a fan of cluttered handlebars) so I just let it hang out on the floor and I use my gears to change resistance.
4. One thing I didn't realize until a few days ago-the plastic pieces at the four corners allow you to adjust the height of the trainer to 6 different settings. At first mine was set up with all four at different heights, but now that has been fixed.
5. A lot of people said to get a riser block for the front tire, but this isn't necessary, either. It turns out that the foam pieces that are used to protect the trainer during shipping are the perfect size to put my front tire in and the perfect height to raise the handlebars.

All in all, it is a great trainer for a low price and I'm glad I got it.

Exercises are to be performed in a step-wise fashion. DO NOT move on to the next step until all exercises can be com­pleted in the previous step without pain, i.e. Step 1 must be completed before Step 2, Step 2 before Step 3 and so on.
None of these exercises should increase pain. If you experience pain from a particular exercise, do not practice that exercise. Be patient! Shoulder rehabilitation is a slow process and may take two to three months.

1. Oatmeal
If I could only choose one source of complex, starchy carbohydrates for a fat loss program, this would be it! Oatmeal is the one carbohydrate food that virtually 100% of all bodybuilders and fitness models eat ona daily basis. What makes it so great? Well, although it’s a starchy carbohydrate, oatmeal has a nice balance between carbs, protein and good fat. A half a cup contains 3 grams of fat, 27 grams of carbs and 5 grams of protein. The low glycemic index, combined withthe presence of protein and fat makes oatmeal a very slowlyreleased carb – exactly what you’re looking for when you want to get lean.

Make sure you choose the all-natural oats; either old-fashioned oats (such as Quaker) or the quick oats. Stay away fromthe sweetened and or flavored oatmeal packets. Oatmeal is delicious with natural (sugar free) applesauce and cinnamon. Or, try some crushed walnuts or flaxseeds in your morning oats, which will give your “porridge” a nice crunchy texture while adding those desirable “good fats” we all need. For a complete meal, try a couple scoops of Vanilla Praline flavored protein powder in your oatmeal. If you get tired ofoatmeal, there are plenty of other cooked whole grain cereals in the “oatmeal family.” Look in your local health food store (or a gourmet supermarket) for barley, wheat, titricale, rye, oat bran and flax cereals (or a multi grain combination of the above).

2. Yams (and sweet potatoes)
Right behind oatmeal, yams (and sweet potatoes) are probably my second favorite starchy carbohydrate. Flavorful, all-natural, low in calories, and packed with nutrients and antioxidants like beta-carotene, it’s no wonder yams are a favorite carbohydrate among bodybuilders, fitness competitors and health-seekers alike. According to Brian Rowley, science editorfor FLEX magazine, “Bodybuilders use yams when cutting bodyfat because they are low on the glycemic index. Waxy white potatoes (boilers) are high on the glycemic index, so they make an excellent postworkout meal, but nothing compares with a yam the rest of the time.” Although the glycemic index is a secondary factor when making carb choices on the BFFM program, if you’re carb sensitive or if you’re on a very strict diet (like a contest diet), then the glycemic index should be given more weight in your choices. Yams are one of the best. Sweet potatoes are not exactly the same thing as yams (they’re slightly higher on the glycemic index), but they’re otherwise similar, which also makes them good choices for fat burning diets. You can identify a yam by its darker orange color, pointier ends and unusual sizes/shapes. Combine a yam with a green veggie, a chicken breast, lean red meat or fish, and you’ve got yourself a perfect fat-burning, muscle building, metabolism boosting meal.

3. Potatoes (white or red)
Potatoes have earned an undeserved reputation as a food to avoid on a fat loss program. But think about it; Potatoes meetevery criteria of a great carbohydrate: potatoes are a complex carb. They are all-natural. They contain fiber, vitamins and minerals. They are filling. They are low in calories. So why do people avoid them?
One reason is because they confuse a dry potato with a loaded potato. Smother a potato with butter, sour cream and bacon bits and then you’ve got yourself a fattening, calorie-dense ensemble. Eat it dry or top it with Butter sprinkles, salsa or your favorite low fat, low calorie topping and you can’t go wrong. Another reason people might avoid the potatois because they are using the glycemic index as their primary gauge for choosing carbohydrates. Potatoes are high on the glycemic index, which means they are absorbed as blood sugar very rapidly. What most people don’t realize however, is that when you eat your potato as a whole meal with your favorite lean protein, the glycemicindex of the entire meal is much lower. Most people also don’t realize that some white potatoes are higher in the GI than others. Baking potatoes are higher in amylose, a slow releasing starch, so the glycemic index is lower. Russet potatoesare also moderate on the GI. Waxy potatoes or boilers are high GIfoods. If you’re extremelycarb sensitive or hypoglycemic, then you might want to eat more yams than white potatoes, but generally speaking, white potatoes make a superb addition to almost any fat burning diet. I personally eat white potatoes right up until the day of a bodybuilding contest and I have no difficulty reaching 3-4% body fat.

4. Brown Rice
Brown rice is another staple food of bodybuilders and you often see the “muscled ones” chowing down platefuls of rice, both in season and out of season (in smaller quantities during the “cutting-up” season). Prior to contests, bodybuilders sometimes reduce the amount of rice (starchy carbs) and add in more green veggies (fibrous carbs), but rice is a solid year round staple, as long as you keep your calories in check. Obviously, this means avoiding fried rice or other rice dishes that have added fat and calories. Steamed or boiled rice is the way to go. Of the many types of rice, slow-cooked brown rice or basmati rice are your number one choices. Instant (pre-cooked) rice is fine when you’re in a crunch for time, but the instant rice digests muchmore quickly and is processed in the body more like a simple carbohydrate. The same goes for white rice, especiallythe sweet variety that’s usually served in Chinese and Asian restaurants (including sushi rolls). White rice is the processed version of brown rice. Although it’s still technically a starchy complex carbohydrate, the white rice burns faster and has been stripped of much of its nutritional value. When you’re on a very strict fat loss diet, stick with the slow-cooking brown rice for best results.

5. 100% whole wheat and whole grain products
The “baseline diet” can and should contain a wide variety of bread products with one condition: They must be made from 100% whole grains (and the label must say, “100% whole wheat” or “100% whole grain” as the first ingredient). White bread and anything made out of white flour is not allowed in any quantity on this program (except the occasional planned “cheat meal”). If you’re particularly carb-sensitive, then bread – even the whole wheat variety – is one of the first things to go. A small handful of people – usually one in200, depending on what source you listen to – have sensitivity to the gluten in the wheat. Gluten is a protein found in wheat products and, much like lactose intolerance from dairy products, gluten intolerance can cause digestive difficulties and bloating in certain individuals. Most competitive bodybuilders drop out all the pasta and bread products for the 12-16 week dieting period before a contest, then usually put them back in for off-season maintenance. On very strict fat loss diets, wheat and bread products are usually eliminated completely. Generally speaking, however, 100% whole wheat and other whole grains are perfectly acceptable additions to a healthy diet for long term body composition control, it just depends on how “strict” you want or need to be with your nutrition.

 6. Green fibrous vegetables (broccoli, green beans, asparagus, lettuce, etc)
Fibrous carbs are your number one choicefor fat burning carbohydrates. Green vegetables, also known as fibrous carbs, hardly contain any calories (they have a low calorie density). It’s virtually impossible to overeat green vegetables. Eat them liberally and eat more of them late in the day. A diet of green vegetables combined with lean proteins is one of the best methods of getting lean as quickly as possible.

7. Fresh Fruit

Whole fruits are a fantastic, healthy food suitable for nearly any fat loss program. Although there are some “guru’s” in the bodybuilding industry who claim, “fruit is fattening,” this statement is somewhat misleading. It’s true that a diet of mostly complex carbohydrate will give you better results than a diet of mostly simple carbohydrates, but that’s not the same thing as saying “fruit is fattening.” Although fruits are simple carbohydrates, they are naturalsimple carbohydrates. Most fruits are low in calories, low in carbohydrate grams (compared to starches) and high in fiber. Some fruits such as raisins are extremely calorie dense and best avoided when you’re on a strict fat loss program and your calorie allotment is small. Fruits like apples, peaches, grapefruits, and oranges,at only 60-80 calories apiece (or less), are a great addition to almostany nutritional plan. Just make sure the majority of your carbohydrates are of the complex type. Anall-fruit or mostly fruit diet won’t be as effective for fat loss as one that is mostly green fibrous carbohydrates with lean protein.

8. Skim milk & nonfat dairy products
“Dairy products” cover an entire category of foods including milk, cheese, yogurt, sugar free frozen yogurt, and cottage cheese. To make it on the BFFM “approved” list, a dairy product must be labeled “fat-free,” “skim,” or 1% lowfat. Whole milk dairy products are not allowed, as they are high in fat. Even 2% low fat milk is still 37.5% fat by calories. Dairy products are a “combination food” – they contain carbohydrates andproteins. Because the protein found in dairy products ishigh quality, complete protein, a high protein dairy product can count as an exchange for a protein food. For example, you could have non-fat cottage cheese as a protein instead of a serving of lean meat. Non-fat cheese can also boost the protein content of a meal. Yogurt tends to have less protein than cottage cheese,so a single container of yogurt wouldn’t count as a full protein serving. In fact, yogurt would count more as a simple carbohydrate exchange than a protein (although, you could mix in a scoop of protein powder into your yogurt to make it “high-protein yogurt).

9. Chicken Breast (and Turkey Breast)
Chicken and turkey are probably the number one most popular protein sources among bodybuilders and fat loss seekers. Remove the skin and get the light meat found in the breasts. The thighs are higher in fat and calories. Naturally, your poultry should be broiled, grilled, or roasted and not fried. Also, we’re talking about the real bird here, not the sliced lunch meat you find at deli’s or pre-packed in supermarkets. Lunch meats are processed proteins. Some nutritionists call them “fabricated foods” because they are made from a mix and poured into a mold before being cooked and wrapped. While these are acceptable occasionally, don’t make them a staple in your regular daily diet. Lunch meats are loaded with sodium, preservatives, binders, fillers and other nasty chemicals that you don’t want floating around in your body!

10. Egg whites
The name of the game in fat-burning, muscle-building nutrition is to eat a lean protein with every meal. With zero fat, egg whites are as lean as lean proteins get. Egg whites are right up there with chicken breasts as one of the top three lean proteins of choice for losing fat and gaining muscle. Eggs are a super-high quality protein. The problem with whole eggs is the high fat and calorie content. Fortunately, 100% of the fat is in the yolk, while the protein is split evenly between the yolk and the white. This doesn’t mean you have to throw out all your yolks, but it does mean you should limit your yolks. I’d recommendone yolk for every six whites you eat. Just crack them open, and separate the yolk from the white using the edge of the shell. Or, even easier, simply use “Egg Beaters” or another packaged egg white product. There must be hundreds of ways to make eggs, so use your imagination: Omelets, frittatas, scrambled, fried (in nonstick spray), over easy, sunnyside up, hard-boiled or any other way you like them, use egg whites liberally!

11. Fish and shellfish
Many people complain about the lack of variety in a bodybuilding-style fat-burning diet, which typically has you eating egg whites, tuna and chicken day in, day out. What most people don’t eat enough of is fish and seafood. By using different types of fish and shellfish as protein sources, you can add an incredible amount of variety a well as getting those valuable good fats. Here is just a partial list of fish to consider: salmon, tuna, haddock, flounder, mackerel, trout, snapper, sea bass, swordfish, mahi mahi, perch, orange roughy, sole, Halibut, herring cod and catfish. As with other meats, eat your fish baked,grilled or broiled and avoid fatty, high calorie sauces and butter. Most fish are very low in fat and high in protein. Some fish, such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring and trout, are high in fat. However, because fish is so high in Omega 3 fatty acids, these fish can and should be used liberally. Shellfish have many of the benefits that fish have and it can add some variety to your diet if you’re getting bored of egg whites and chicken. This category includes shrimp, crab, lobster, mussels, etc. By the way, when you’re eating in restaurants, fish is a great choice, as long as you make sure there are no hidden bad fats or extra calories.

12. Lean red meat
Bodybuilders are quite famous for loving their red meat. Many bodybuilders believe that red meat helps muscle growth, and there may be much truth in that statement. Red meat is high in protein, B-12, iron and creatine. The problem with most cuts of red meat is the high fat content. However, not all cuts of red meat are the same. It’s a mistake to label the entire red meat category as a no-no because of high fat content. If you carefully choose the leanest cuts possible and keep your portion sizes small, red meat can be a great addition to a fat burning program. For example, a 6 oz serving of lean, trimmed top round steak has only 9 grams of fat, while a 6 oz of untrimmed porterhouse has 37 grams of fat (and the 18 oz porterhouse you’re often served in a steak house has over 100 grams of fat!)
